WWMS Training

Whether it's a weekly bike ride or an impromptu swim at Walden Pond, WWMS members regularly volunteer to organize training sessions. Generally these are posted on the team's email list. To help you plan your triathlon training we've compiled a list of our teams workouts, routes and resources.

One of our longest running weekly training groups Mystic Mauraders is highlighted below along with our annual can't miss team Training Weekend.

Mystic Marauders Training Group

The Mystic Marauders swim, bike and sometimes run along Upper Mystic Lake.  We do this for fun and sheer enjoyment on mid-week mornings.  Tuesdays focus on longer swimming; Thursdays add a hill repeat (or three!) to build strength for longer rides.

We encourage people to learn the course and we welcome all for this no-drop ride. After three rides with the group, we expect people to have learned the route.  Can't bike, but want to swim?  Drive instead: Mystic Valley Pkwy, Winchester, MA 01890  Note that our Beach Arrival time varies between 35-45 minutes from the departure time from Ace, depending on traffic and rider speeds.

Mystic Swimmers

Workout type: Urban ride and Open water lake swim of .25 -1.0 miles.  Run instead of Swim in early/late season.

Mystic Marauders Days and Times: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00 AM-7:35 AM, weather-permitting. Heavy rain cancels.

Workout start: ACE Wheelworks (corner of Elm/Willow Streets near Porter Square in Cambridge/Somerville).

What to bring:  goggles, swim cap, bike, flat kit, small towel, and water bottle. Please wear what you'll swim in under your bike clothes.

Bike Route: Ace Wheelworks, to the Hill, the Lake (swim beach), and back complete course includes biking on urban roads through Davis Sq, which is always at your own risk.

Swim Route*: Short 0.25 mi (First buoy only ) or 0.6 mi (Ken's buoy-to-point ), Long 0.72 (First buoy to first L pin ), Super 1.0 mi (First buoy to L and S pins) all in Upper Mystic Lake.  We swim as a group and in pairs, but always at your own risk.

Join us on Saturday, Oct 2 (rain date, Oct 3) for the Mystic Marauders "do it yourself" D-I-Y Tri.  SWIM to the L-buoy, BIKE 3x the Mystic Lake 5-mile loop, clockwise all right-turns on major roads for 3 loops (15 miles total), then RUN the 3-miler on the Eastern Shore.   Everyone times him/herself and takes his/her own risks-- this is an unofficial event and roads are open to all, so please be careful.  Have fun!

Thursday- Jane, 617-799-5592, and Sherman, 617-909-1914

No Sleep Til P'Town X (June 26th)

WWMS Provincetown Bike RideWhen: Saturday, June 26 (rain date: Sunday, June 27)

Get excited, the long rainy days are behind us and the last weekend in June marks the 10th annual No Sleep Til P'Town ride led by Wheelworks multisport member Jon C.

>> View pictures from the 2010 ride

Course: This 135-mile route to Provincetown generally follows the Claire Saltonstall bike route. There are a couple of detours (including York Street in Canton, and Route 6A and Satucket Road on the Cape) that are nicer alternatives to the Saltonstall route. We start at the Starbucks at the corner of Beacon and Charles streets in Beacon Hill. The Provincetown ferry takes us back to the World Trade Center on the South Boston waterfront. Cue sheets will be distributed before we depart.

The route features modest uphills as we leave the city, and then it is essentially flat or  downhill to Plymouth. Most of the Cape route is flat (including a nice stretch on the bike path from Brewster to Wellfleet) except for a four mile stretch of rollers in Truro near the end.

Get Ready for Training Weekend! (May 14-16)

Each year WWMS holds a pre-season training weekend dedicated to race preparation, coaching clinics and Training Weekendgroup activities. Training weekend gives us the opportunity to kick-off the triathlon season, get in some great workouts and most importantly, bond as a team and have some fun! Join us as we climb the hills of the Kancamagus highway, swim in Echo lake, run, hike, catch up with teammates and prepare for the upcoming season.

May 14-16, 2010 was our Training Weekend at the Franconia Inn.  Thanks to Beck and her helpers for organizing this great event!
